Categorizing blog articles is very important for users as well as Search engine bots for understanding content and structure of blog.
If you have multiple niche articles that are posted under one category, then search engine crawlers and users both will get confused. So it is always better to have articles categorized and sub-categorized for better understanding and even refinement of articles.
As I had already started blogging without specifying the categories, I would be adding the categories and sub-categories now as I know what type of articles BeingBlog has in it.
Well, I won’t be sub-categorizing because, BeingBlog is simple and straight forward blog concentrated only on WordPress CMS, Web Hosting and Search Engines Optimization.
Add posts categories for new articles?
To add post categories, there are two ways to do:
- Adding from New Post page: is very simple. If you think that your written article doesn’t fit into any existing category from categories list, then click on Add New Category link. Enter the category name and select Parent Category (if you want to sub-categorized, else leave as it is) and click on Add New Category button. (screenshot below)
- Adding from Categories page under Posts tab: is yet another method to add categories which will appear in Category list. For adding new category go to Dashboard > Posts tab > Categories link and add new category name, slug url, parent category (if any), category description and hit on Submit button. (screenshot below)
Category added will automatically appear in category list on New Post page categories widget.
Add post categories for existing articles:
While writing this post, I only have one default category. But now I have added four categories in BeingBlog that will be displayed in Sidebar for quick access.
As I added new categories, I need to assign these categories to existing posts. I will be doing this in one go from All Posts under Posts tab.
Select from check boxes whichever post need to be assign same category. From Bulk Actions drop down select Edit action and hit on Apply button.
Bulk edit drop screen will appear (below screenshot) with many bulk actions. Select category from Categories list in bulk edit which you need to assign and hit on Update button.
All the selected articles will be assigned with new category. Now next step will be removing default category which were previously assigned.
Removing categories in one go is not possible, hence we need to perform action one after the other repetitively for every post. Click on Quick Edit link which is displayed on hovering over any post.
You will get few edit options for selected post. Now, un-tick the category which needs to be unassigned and click on Update button.
Finally after editing and removing unwanted category for every post, now every BeingBlog article has been categories in its category.
This is how BeingBlog looks after editing category for every article.
Note and Conclusion:
These are few simple methods to adding and modify categories for articles. Now BeingBlog also has it own categories. We will be adding these categories on Navigation menu for quick access.
