This has happened with me, once I went to my uncle’s factory. When I returned home I checked my pocket for my mobile but I was unable to find it. So I quickly opened my PC and logged in my account (which is associated with my smartphone) in device manager website. I checked my device last location, which showed a coarse location of road and I quickly understood that I lost my device in factories public transport vehicle. I called my uncle and he safeguarded my device.

So the thing is you can protect your smartphone, erase your personal data, locate your lost device location. Only thing needed is that your device Data Plan should be active. Now if device is theft and suppose thief who had stolen forgot to deactivate data plan or activated then it is possible to check the location of device.
