There are hell lot of spammers around the internet world who wants to get back-links to there site by doing cheap link spamming. Even we use to get lot of spams comments daily and got fed of daily cleaning. Hence we thought of adding something with will control spam.
Previously, We use to have Website URL field in comment section. Due to large number of cheese and spammy comments we thought of removing Website URL field, and we succeed by adding few line of code in function.php file.
Later we added and setup Akismet (An Anti-spam plugin for WordPress). We succeeded further in term of removing spam links. But still some spam comments use to bypass the Akismet. Hence we finally decided to use Google reCAPTCHA for spam protection.
Google reCAPTCHA officially doesn’t have any WordPress plugins for spam protection. But one of the plugin developers has developed WP-reCAPTCHA which has integrated Google new reCAPTCHA with WordPress comment box (screenshot below).
Installation and Setup:
- Download and Install WP-reCAPTCHA plugin in WordPress.
- Activate the Plugin
- Now go to Google re-captcha and add your website to get unique Secret Key (both Public and Private).
- Input both the keys in WP-reCAPTCHA settings page and save.
- Check your comment box for recaptcha on any post.
Note and Conclusion:
Pros — WP-reCAPTCHA works with single site as well as WordPress Multi-site installation. Only single registration of domain name is enough for sub-domains or sub-directories.
Completely eliminate automated robots spam comments. Keep Analytics track of spammers. With new design, make website look more beautiful and attractive.
Cons — We don’t have option to hide it for logged in users (say Administrator) neither we can’t customize it according to website color and texture.
