A Complete WordPress Guide for Blogger

A complete WordPress guide from planning strategy, niche selection, hosting, installation, setup, settings and working with WordPress blog.

With all my knowledge and experience on WordPress CMS and Search Engine behavior, I thought of starting WordPress guide for my reader. This will be a series of Blogs which will be totally dedicated for WordPress from initiation to conclusion.

If you have visited this page then you would definitely have some idea about what exactly WordPress does. Just to give a brief idea about WordPress:

WordPress is open content management software (CMS) that has powered more than 45% website exist today online. WordPress is also a blogging software that allows you to create blog posts and dynamic content for website. It is only open source software that is backed with thousands of community developers and support team. You can find more details about WordPress here.

Now, as you know what WordPress is and how exactly it works, lets get started with creating WordPress blog in following series of blog post.

Pre-requsiste for WordPress website:

  • Selecting a niche for blogging: Selecting a niche which you are interested is most important that what interest your visitor or which is market most demanded niche. So choosing a niche for blogging is necessary.
  • Look for domain name and social media: Getting simple and easy to remember domain is better than having a long or confusing domain name. Also make sure that your social URLs are also available similar to domain name. Like Facebook.com/SmartGeekBlog and Twitter.com/SmartGeekBlog.
  • Look for great web hosting: Getting a good web hosting is very important for any online website or blog. Based on your requirement you can choose any type of hosting like Shared, Cloud, VPS, Dedicated web server.
  • Blogging strategy: Planning a good blogging strategy is equally important for your WordPress blog. If you are well planned regarding all the post and articles in publishing, your search rank would be good. Search engine like those blogs or website that are frequently updated.

Installing WordPress:

  • Using One Click installer – BlueHost: Shared or VPS hosting like BlueHost and Hostgator has one click installation from CPanel dashboard. You can directly install the WordPress using these one click installer. One click installer does not required any back-end knowledge about WordPress setup. It will automatically create and configure Database and basic setup with needs to be done while installation of new WordPress.
  • Installing on LAMP or LEMP server – DigitalOcean:  Installing WordPress on any un-managed cloud server like DigitalOcean needs knowledge about installation. If you have choose a managed cloud server company like WPEngine or Pressidium then you don’t to worry about installations. You will have a personal technical support team taking care about installation and setup.  As of pricing, it will be costlier that Shared Hosting.

Setting WordPress:

  • General Settings: After every WordPress installation, you need to change General Setting according to requirement. General Settings includes Site Name, Description, WordPress and Site URL setup and Time Zone location setup.
  • Permalinks settings: Permalinks are slug URL or each post or article published. This is one of the important factor for Search Engine Optimization of blog. Make sure you change the default setting to /%postname%/ for good SEO.
  • Comment settings: To avoid spam comments on every article published on blog, make sure that you have good comment and discussion settings. Also install and Akismet WordPress plugin for your blog to catch and delete spam automatically.
  • Other Important settings: Other basic important settings in WordPress are following.
  1. Media — un-check if you don’t want to organize in uploaded files in month and year basis.
  2. Reading —  setting number of post loop to be display in single page (default is set to 10) also changing the home page to any static page.
  3. Writing — If you are using any external software like Windows Live writer to publish article then keep XML-RPC enable else you can disable it and protect your WordPress installation from hackers. You can also setup and change a default category if no category is selected.

Selecting WordPress themes:

  • Free WordPress Themes: WordPress Theme directory has huge number of themes and all the themes are free to use on your WordPress blog. Every day at-least 10-20 themes are added, may be more than that. If you are just a starting for a blog, then using free themes will help you saving money. But if you want to get a personal support then you need to choose any paid WordPress theme company.
  • Paid WordPress Themes: Unlike free theme, there are also paid themes for WordPress were users will get one on one support from theme developer. Paid themes are rich in features and with lot of customization as compared to free themes. Some of the paid themes companies are: ThemeForest and Evanto.
  • Framework Themes: WordPress has awesome feature of creating the child theme over a parent theme. This help few companies like StudioPress, Thesis and other to create WordPress Framework and design layout on child theme. Using framework is very easy and has huge professional support.

  • Google Analytics: it is used for tracking the visitors, page-views, bounce rate and many more stats on your blog. It gives the detailed information about visitors and there behavior.
  • Google Webmaster Tools: It is used for submiting the new articles or pages to Google Index so as to display your blog in search engine. Your blog should be SEO optimized to get good Google rank.
  • Google AdSense: is online web ads publisher account to earn money from your blog. It is contextual ads network from Google to display ads on your blog. Getting an AdSense account is very difficult these days, hence if you get one then you are the lucky.
  • Social Media Links: Getting social media link is equally important as getting the domain name. If someone else has claimed your social URLs then you might loose your traffic as well as business authority. So it always important to have social media URLs at-least on Facebook, Google+, Twitter and YouTube.
